Discover

As market research revealed a growing demand for diverse comic book content, we saw an opportunity to engage teenagers through a platform centered around scripture-based comics. The project began with a clear UX strategy to outline program goals: ensuring continuous engagement with faith-based content, building a platform appealing to teenagers, and exploring potential partnerships.

Our goals

  • Engage users with scripture through comics.
  • Build an engaging platform for teenagers.
  • Test the platform’s effectiveness for OneHope.
  • Innovate ways for users to communicate with online missionaries.

We also set research objectives, focusing on teenage comic book reading habits, how they discover new content, and which platforms they use. We conducted stakeholder interviews to ensure alignment with business goals.

Research Methodology

To understand teenage behavior around comic books, we employed multiple research methods:

  • Generative research via surveys distributed on Reddit and OneHope.
  • Competitive analysis of popular comic platforms like Webtoons, Marvel Comics, and Manga sites.

The insights we gathered revealed that teenagers read comics weekly or every few months, with discovery happening mostly through search engines or social media. The platforms they used were diverse, but the most important factors were engaging plots and artwork. Some teens wanted interactive elements, while others preferred minimal engagement.

Define

Our research led to the key question: How might we create a comic book platform that keeps users engaged while offering faith-based content?

We developed personas and created journey maps to visualize the user experience. A standout scenario was Matt S., a typical user who struggled to stay engaged with still images and text. His experience guided our design focus: creating a more interactive, dynamic comic-reading platform.

From our design sessions, we identified key must-haves:

  • Concise content in chapter format.
  • Seamless artwork with minimal text.
  • Mobile-first design.
  • Integrated Bible stories to encourage scripture engagement.

We also noted potential nice-to-haves like more animations, gamification, and forums for user interaction.

Develop

Moving into development, we created low-fidelity prototypes and established the platform’s look and feel through a mood board and branding survey. This guided the platform’s identity to ensure it resonated with the teenage audience.

We then assessed the prototypes and identified the minimum viable product (MVP), focusing on essential features given the project’s time and budget constraints. Once the high-fidelity prototypes were completed, the design was handed off to the web development team for build and launch preparation.

Deliver

With the platform nearing launch, we collaborated closely to finalize the design and ensure a smooth transition to development. The MVP prioritized concise content delivery, engaging artwork, and mobile-first functionality.

Discussion

Our research team held focus groups with the OM's and there was positive feedback from users. Many online missionaries communicated of users having conversations about Jesus and wanting to learn more about the Bible.

Awaken Comics now has two comics on the site: The Bridge and Story of Jesus which have been contextualized for the Philippines, Indonesia, India,  Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam

Reflection

While our research was thorough, we realized in hindsight that more usability testing would have improved the product’s overall quality. Additionally, earlier 1:1 interviews would have provided deeper user insights and allowed for more informed design decisions before moving into surveys and development.
